What is Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant procedure is a cosmetic procedure where in the plastic surgeon tends to the cases of balding by moving hair to the bald area. Hair Transplant: Types and Procedures

Once you consult with a plastic surgeon and share your expectations, he will examine your scalp and your hair concerns. The surgeon will assess your scalp condition and see the scope of hair available for transplant and the potential for new hair growth. On the day of the procedure, your scalp will be thoroughly cleaned and then local anesthesia will be administered.

There are two types of hair transplant procedures:

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT)

The surgeon will cut out a strip of skin from the area with hair follicles from the donor area. The incision on this area will then be closed by stitches. The strip so extracted would generally contain Follicular Units (FUs) with 1 to 4 hairs per unit. Using a microscope the strip of donor skin is separated into tiny follicular units which are then inserted into the desired area. Also known as Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUS).

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The surgeon, using a tiny punch tool, will extract small follicles of hair from the donor area. These grafts would also contain about 1 to 4 hair follicles. These are then inserted into the bald spot. This procedure does not require stitching and also, a long scar is avoided, though scarring will be there but hidden in hairs

Both are effective procedures, but the selection depends on the balding situation and the desired results.

The procedure takes anywhere between 4-10 hours, depending on how many grafts are to be transplanted. In some cases, more than one session may be required to complete the transplantation procedure, fixed at long intervals to give time for proper recovery after each sitting. If there are stitches, they will be removed after two weeks from each sitting.

Recovery Process

You may experience some soreness and itching, for which your surgeon will prescribe you medication along with pain medications, antibiotics to prevent any possible infections, and even anti-inflammatory pills. Recovery is not so difficult, and you can resume daily chores and work in a few days after the surgery. If you experience some hair fall from the transplant area, it is normal as this would make way for new hair growth in that area.
